Stirling Head, Mary of Guise, Stirling Castle

Stirling Head, Mary of Guise, Stirling Castle

sketchfab

This replica depicts a Stirling Head, an oak roundel forming part of a series of carvings that adorned James V's Presence Chamber during the 16th Century at Stirling Castle. The Head portrays Mary of Guise, placed beside James V to commemorate their union. Stirling heads are built from three panels, originally held together solely by adhesive. Most Heads, however, consist of two layers, with an additional board or block placed over the middle panel to allow carvers to sculpt the central portion in high relief. Nail holes in the borders reveal how the Heads were secured to the ceiling. For details on visiting Stirling Castle, please visit our website. Rae Project | STC040
