Stirling Head, Female Worthy, Stirling Castle
sketchfab
This is a replica of one of the iconic Stirling Heads, intricately crafted oak roundels dating back to the 1540s that make up an elaborate series of carvings adorning the ceiling of James V's Presence Chamber at Stirling Castle. The head in question is of a female Worthy, boasting a remarkable border carved with 'O's, 'I's, and 'II's encircling the circumference - a fascinating discovery believed to be musical notation, and possibly the oldest surviving piece of written Scottish instrumental music. Rather than an exact musical score, these markings were likely intended as a guide for musicians. The Stirling Heads are composed of three panels, originally secured solely by glue. The majority of these heads are partially constructed from two layers, with an additional board or block placed over the middle board to enable the carver to create the central portion in high relief.
