Stirling Head, Charles V, Stirling Castle
sketchfab
This Charles V replica, an oak roundel forming part of a series of carvings that adorned the ceiling of James V's Presence Chamber at Stirling Castle, portrays Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain from 1519 to 1556. The Stirling Heads are made up of 3 panels, originally secured by glue only. The majority of the Heads, however, were constructed in 2 ply, an additional board or block being placed over the middle board to enable the carver to model the central portion of the medallion in high relief. Nail holes are visible in the borders which indicate how the Heads were fastened to the ceiling. For details on visiting Stirling Castle, visit our website.
