The Stirling engine is a heat engine that operates by cyclic compression and expansion of air or other gas (the working fluid) at different temperatures, causing a net conversion of heat energy to mechanical work. It was invented in 1816 by Robert Stirling, a Scottish clergyman, and has since seen various applications and improvements. Its main components include:1. Heat Source2. Cylinder3. Piston or Displacer4. Regenerator5. Heat ExchangersThe working principle of a Stirling engine involves four main processes:1. Compression: The working fluid (typically air) is compressed within the cylinder, usually by the motion of the piston. This compression causes the temperature of the gas to increase.2. Heating: The compressed gas is then brought into contact with the heat source, where it absorbs heat and its temperature further increases.3. Expansion: The heated gas expands, pushing against the piston and doing work. This is the phase where the engine generates mechanical power.4. Cooling: As the gas expands, it cools down. It is then brought into contact with the heat sink, where it releases heat to the surroundings and its temperature decreases.
