I create small pegs, back them with half-inch carpet tape or automotive moulding tape for extreme weather conditions, and I have a spot to hang little items. I use one to keep my steel ruler within easy reach, another for the plastic bag that sweeps scraps into it. The "finger hump" guides my hand when it's hidden under the work table top.
