This cap is a Stevenson-style design for a thermometer housed within a 6mm carbon rod (commonly utilized in kite construction). The thermoelement is positioned 5cm from the top end of the rod, allowing ample shade provided by the screens. Both lower and upper sections conveniently fit on a 10cm segment of the rod. OpenScad files are included for those desiring modifications. I printed mine using white PLA, and will monitor its durability amidst varying weather conditions. An update from January 2016 reports that, after two years in middle European outdoor settings with exposure to sunlight, rain, snow, and temperatures ranging from -15 to +35°C, white PLA has proven to be highly resistant to weathering - discoloration or brittleness are absent. However, dirt accumulation is noticeable. Black PLA is not recommended due to overheating in direct sunlight, which leads to deformation. Interestingly, the white PLA exhibits transparency to infrared light, causing the thermometer to register slight temperature increases on days with bright, sunny intervals. I swapped out the parts for silver-colored PLA, demonstrating some improvement but not complete resolution of the issue. Curiosity persists regarding the longevity and performance of the silver PLA.
