
Stevenson screen for weather station

This Stevenson screen-like cap for a thermometer fits snugly onto a 6 mm carbon rod, the type often used for kites. The thermoelement is situated 5 cm from the top of the rod, creating a perfect shade to protect it from direct sunlight. Five lower and one upper section fit neatly on 10 cm of the rod. OpenScad files are included for anyone interested in making modifications. I printed this cap using white PLA, and we'll see how well it withstands various weather conditions. Update: After two years of exposure to middle European outdoor conditions, including plenty of sunshine, rain, snow, and temperatures ranging from -15°C to 35°C, I would rate PLA as extremely weather-resistant. The material shows no signs of degradation or brittleness except for a slight dirtiness. I do not recommend using black PLA due to its tendency to deform under direct sunlight. However, I noticed that my white PLA is somewhat transparent to infrared light, causing the temperature sensor to read slightly elevated temperatures when the sun shines through on bright but cloudy days. To address this issue, I replaced the parts with new ones printed in silver. The results are slightly better, although not perfect. I'm curious to see if silver PLA is as resistant as white PLA.
