A Motor, also referred to as Step Motor or Stepper, is a Brushless DC Electric Motor that divides a complete rotation into numerous equal steps. The motor's position can then be instructed to move and hold at one of these steps without any position sensor for feedback (an open-loop controller), provided the motor is carefully sized to the application in terms of torque and speed. Large Step Motors, specifically Switched Reluctance Motors, are basically very large Steppers with a reduced pole count, and generally operate using closed-loop commutation.
