In order to manage the voltage and heat output on my steppers, I experimented with adding 40mm fans for cooling. This solution has proven highly effective. These fans have mounts for both the x-carriage and extruder on my Prusa i3 from MakerFarm. The extruder fan mount provides multiple air paths, primarily to cool the stepper but also the j-head, as well as support for the rear of the stepper, addressing a weakness in Greg Wade's design where the heavy stepper is cantilevered off a plastic armature. The mount is printed in two halves that are joined after printing, using rivets, bolts or welding (as seen in the first image).
