The shape is a square that expands and contracts around an elliptical core. As its dimensions fluctuate, the square's outline follows the ellipse's curvature. To maintain even spacing, the steps along the ellipse's circumference are each the same fixed distance apart, rather than being evenly angled, which would compress them at the curve's extremities.
