Stephensons Rocket and Sans Pareil dominated the Rainhill trials of 1829, with the Rocket engineered by George and Robert Stephenson, while Timothy Hackworth created the impressive Sans Pareil. Both engines were built in 1829, with the skilled craftsmen at the Stephenson works in Newcastle precision-casting the cylinders on both steam locomotives. The Rocket showcased many groundbreaking features that remain standard in modern steam locos today.
