It was significantly more rugged than the Mk I. The flash eliminator and folding handle of the Mk I were eliminated. A detachable barrel was provided, projecting three inches beyond the barrel sleeve. Additionally, a special catch allowed the magazine to be slid partially out of the magazine housing and the housing rotated 90 degrees counterclockwise, covering the ejection opening and enabling the weapon and magazine to lie flat on its side. The barrel sleeve was shorter, featuring three sets of three holes equally spaced on the shroud. To facilitate holding a Sten by the hot barrel sleeve with one's supporting hand, an insulating lace-on leather sleeve guard was sometimes issued. Sten Mk II's in German possession were designated MP 749(e), indicating English origin. Some Mk IIs were fitted with a wooden stock due to its desirability and interchangeability with the Mk V. Furthermore, the Spz-kr assault rifle utilizes components from the Sten Mk II receiver.
