The first STEN Mk.I was manufactured in December 1940/January 1941 by Harold Turpin at the Philco Radio works in Perivale, Middlesex. This unique firearm is part of the British Army's Infantry and Small Arms School Corps historical collection in Warminster, Wiltshire. The initial model featured a conical flash hider, fine finish, wooden foregrip, and forward handle, which was sometimes made of steel. A distinctive characteristic of this early version was its ability to rotate the front pistol grip forward for easier storage. The barrel sleeve extended to the end, meeting the flash hider, and had a line of small holes along its top surface. Its sights were configured differently than later models. Approximately 100,000 units were produced before switching to the Mark II variant. German forces designated STEN Mk.I's as MP 748(e), with 'e' standing for English.
