This is an icon of Venice, showcasing the winged lion grasping a Bible that serves as the emblem for the city of Venice. Venice was established in 542 AD. The patron saint is Saint Mark (San Marco), and his symbol adorns the shield. The Stemma of San Marco can be accessed online from Scan the World or viewed at The Museu Civici agli Eremitani. Saint Mark, represented as a lion, is inspired by Mark's description of John the Baptist as "The voice crying out in the wilderness: Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths," which artists likened to a roaring lion.
