Stemma of San Marco
myminifactory
This high relief depicts a winged lion holding a bible, serving as the symbol for Venice. Founded in 542, this city is deeply connected to St Mark, its patron saint, whose emblem is proudly displayed on its arms. The Stemma of Venice can be downloaded from Scan the World, where it's also housed at The Museu Civici agli Eremitani. St Mark, often represented as a lion, originates from Mark's description of John the Baptist as "The voice crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way for the Lord, make his paths straight." Artists interpreted this as a roaring lion.
