Stele Funeraire D'aristomache
sketchfab
Funerary stele of Aristomachus, 4th century before Christ, crafted in Attic marble, now housed at Musée d'Art et d'Histoire within the Musée du Cinquantenaire complex in Brussels, Belgium, captured with ReMake and ReCap pro software from AutoDesk. This stele showcases an inscription on its pediment, reading "Aristomaché daughter of Syros." It appears Aristomachus passed away prior to marriage, as her husband's name is not mentioned alongside her father's. She sits elegantly, draped in a tunic and coat that covers her head, shaking hands with a bearded man clad in a cloak. In the background stands another woman. The gesture of handshaking (dexiosis) holds significant meaning within the Greek world, serving as a powerful symbol affirming relationships between individuals, often family members, during times of separation. This poignant representation vividly conveys the strength and unity of the family group. To stay updated on future discoveries, please follow me on Twitter at @GeoffreyMarchal.
