Stele dedicated to Isis

Two women, possibly former slaves of a single Roman noblewoman, likely dedicated this slab to Isis. As Egypt became a Roman province in the 1st century B.C., the subject of Isis gained immense popularity in Greek and Roman sculpture. Mystery cults that blended Greco-Roman and Egyptian mythology quickly spread throughout the Roman Empire, with Isis receiving special reverence. Her image was often linked with Aphrodite, which is why statues of Isis can be found not only in Greece but also in Italy.
