sketchfab
In 2006, the Zamani Project embarked on a comprehensive documentation of the Stelae Field in Axum using cutting-edge terrestrial laser scanning technology. Nestled near Ethiopia's northern border, the crumbling remains of ancient Aksum bear testament to the kingdom's former glory as the dominant power between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia. Spanning over 1,000 years, from the 1st century AD to the 13th century, the colossal ruins comprise imposing monolithic obelisks, towering stelae, grandiose royal tombs, and the remnants of ancient fortresses. Even after Aksum's precipitous decline in the 10th century, Ethiopian emperors remained steadfast in their tradition, continuing to be crowned in this revered city until modern times.
