The Zamani Project boldly mapped out the Stelae Field in Aksum (Axum) back in 2006 using state-of-the-art terrestrial laser scanning technology. Stela number one had given way to gravity and collapsed. Deep within Ethiopia's northern border, the ancient city of Aksum lies waiting to be explored. This historic site marks the very heart of ancient Ethiopia, a time when the Kingdom of Aksum reigned supreme between the Eastern Roman Empire and Persia. Majestic ruins dating from the 1st to the 13th century AD still stand today, including towering monolithic obelisks, giant stone stelae, regal tombs, and crumbling remains of ancient castles. Even after its heyday had long since faded in the 10th century, Ethiopian emperors continued to be crowned in Aksum's grand tradition.
