Steel ruler transformed into caliper/鋼尺改造成游標卡尺
thingiverse
I've always been fascinated by using a vernier caliper myself. The gear version I came across online was completely unimpressive - a major letdown! The internet has stumbled upon an ingenious and straightforward concept, with a design that's surprisingly uncomplicated. With this concept combined with the real-world vernier caliper, designing the structure becomes a much simpler task. The upper part of the M5 screw incorporates my previous experience with screws. Using a thread in 3D printing is incredibly practical, and the thread doesn't require any trimming at all. To enhance the tightness, I designed an adjustable gap component along both axes, allowing for precise fine-tuning without compromising on fit. After conducting a thorough test print and assembly, I found that the fit was surprisingly good, although the PLA material did exhibit some softness overall (despite being printed 100 times). The measurement accuracy is 0.5mm, which is a significant improvement over using a steel ruler - it's truly the greatest benefit of having a vernier caliper. If you need to measure intricate objects, I highly recommend purchasing one, and preferably an upgraded model for even more precise results. Personally, I found the design and implementation process to be quite challenging, especially when striving for precision and accuracy in a vernier caliper.
