Steamdeck Grip Mk2
thingiverse
This is version 2 of my Steamdeck Grip project. I designed this grip extension to improve the ergonomics of the steamdeck, at least as far as my own hands go. I felt that the deck grips were a bit too small and awkward to hold, especially when using the trackpads a lot. On the first version, I tried to achieve a similar grip style to the original Steam Controller, but I then realised that the Steamdeck is a very different thing altogether. The controls are not laid out the same, so that hand position doesn't work here as well. The new version is closer to the form of the deck shell itself, but it extends the finger holds to allow your hands to fully grip around. For my hands, the stock grip shape leaves the pinky fingers with nothing to hold on to, and it start to feel uncomfortable very quickly. The fact that the steamdeck is a lot heavier to hold than any normal gamepad was also a consideration. I designed the finger grooves to be as deep as I could, to distribute the weight of the unit over as much of the hand as possible. The bottom of the grip was also made flat, to allow standing the unit upright without the need of a kickstand. There was a lot (and I do mean a LOT) of iteration on this project. I've completely lost count of how many of these I have printed. For the CAD file. We are well over 150 revisions already. I want this to be easy to modify by anyone, so I am including the source file (for Fusion 360), which includes the editable form for the grip in the timeline. Just double click that to change the shape however you want. Bear in mind though, this isn't my day job, so the form topology isn't exactly following best practices or anything like that... in fact, it can easily break (and crash fusion) if you delete the wrong edges. Anyhow, I hope this is useful to others.
