I inherited a stunning 80's mahogany two drawer filing cabinet from my family that nobody would have taken at a garage sale. I'm sorry, but I don't have an untouched before picture to show you, but trust me, it was far more ugly than the light brown one shown here. A construction grade 2 x 4 was sliced into thin pieces measuring 3/16 of an inch, which were then sanded, stained and epoxied onto the cabinet. The three-dimensional printed pieces were designed to mimic the look of a vintage steamer trunk, and I added four central decorations because they looked great. All printed parts were primed and painted with metallic acrylic paints before being finished with water-based varathane. Now it's a one-of-a-kind piece of furniture that also serves as a functional home drawer cabinet. I'd love to recreate this project using a metal filing cabinet, giving it a faux hammered copper look by adding the same wood and 3D printed pieces. What do you think? Printing Details: I printed in both ABS and PLA with no significant difference, since neither material requires supports. Initially, I used acetone to smooth out the ABS prints before priming, but once multiple coats of acrylic were applied along with a clear coat, it's tough to notice any difference between the two materials. And besides, the rough, weathered look gives it an attractive air of antiquity.
