One of three massive steam hammer bases stands tall at Wellington Park within the historic Royal Arsenal complex in Woolwich, London. A commemorative plaque attached to the site reveals a fascinating story about the Shell Foundry's origins. The Royal Arsenal underwent a transformative shift in 1855 when advancements in steam power propelled it from a craft workshop era into a massive industrial park. At that time, the steam hammers were the largest and most powerful in existence, delivering crushing blows to iron and steel with precision and strength, shaping and fortifying metal objects in the process. The operation of these mighty hammers commenced at the Royal Arsenal in 1874 during a visit from the Czar of Russia. The massive machines were purchased for £50,000, equivalent to today's value, reaching an impressive height of 45 feet and covering an area of 120 square feet with iron blocks sunk as deep as 30 feet into the ground. On July 19, 2004, Berkeley Homes embarked on a significant operation, relocating these massive steam hammer bases to their final resting place. The heaviest base weighs an astonishing 70 tonnes.
