Portraits of deceased leaders, these anthropomorphic figurines or statues were placed, during funeral rituals, in a commemorative location called mmaso, distinct from the burial site. This clay sculpture is modeled around a wooden rod. It was fired, then covered with a black vegetable varnish. This artwork is characteristic of productions from the Sanwi Kingdom, which developed in northeastern Côte d'Ivoire from the 18th century.
