The renovation of Dijon's Musée des Beaux-Arts presents a unique opportunity for the historic loan of alabaster statuettes from John the Fearless' tomb, Duke of Burgundy, and his wife Margaret of Bavaria. Each figure stands approximately sixteen inches tall. Crafted by Jean de La Huerta and Antoine Le Moiturier between 1443-1456 for Champmol's ducal tomb, they echo the precedent set by Claus Sluter and colleagues, who created similar figures for Duke Philip the Bold's tomb in 1342-1404. These tombs are renowned as among the most opulent and pioneering of late medieval era. A primary innovation lies in the space allocated to the grieving mourners on the base of the tomb, giving the illusion they pass through real cloister arcades.
