Statuette from The Mourners at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, France
myminifactory
The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon is undergoing a renovation that presents the unprecedented chance for loaning the alabaster mourner statues from John the Fearless's tomb. The Duke of Burgundy and his wife, Margaret of Bavaria, had these statuettes carved by Jean de La Huerta and Antoine Le Moiturier between 1443-1456. Each statue stands at approximately sixteen inches tall and was originally placed in the church of Champmol for the ducal tomb. These statues are celebrated as some of the most sumptuous and innovative works from the late Middle Ages, particularly because they allow mourners to pass through real cloister arcades on their base.
