The Musée des Beaux-Arts in Dijon offers a chance for a groundbreaking loan of the alabaster mourners from John the Fearless's tomb. The Duke of Burgundy and his wife, Margaret of Bavaria, are immortalized in 16-inch-high statuettes carved by Jean de La Huerta and Antoine Le Moiturier between 1443-1456. These artists followed Claus Sluter's precedent for the Duke Philip the Bold's tomb. This innovative work features mourners on the tomb base that seem to pass through real cloister arcades. The tombs are renowned as the most opulent of the late Middle Ages.
