This intricately carved wooden statue was crafted around 1900 on the remote Andeman and Nicobar Islands, situated near India. Island residents referred to it as a kareau, or "scare-devil." Skilled religious ritual healers created these statues, which the island community believed possessed magical powers that protected them from harm.
