This sculpture is part of a long line of Roman marble replicas stretching back to a Greek statue of Aphrodite from the 3rd century BC. Some remarkably well-preserved Roman versions reveal that Venus, goddess of love, beauty, and prosperity, rested against a column with a dolphin by her side - an indication of her birth in the ocean.
