This is an impressive sculpture of Thomas Gainsborough, a renowned English painter known for his portraits and landscapes. Alongside Sir Joshua Reynolds, he dominated British portrait art in the late 18th century as one of its most celebrated figures. Working rapidly, Gainsborough's mature paintings feature soft colors and smooth brushstrokes, showcasing his unique style. Though prolific in portraiture, Gainsborough found greater joy in capturing sweeping landscapes, earning him a place alongside Richard Wilson as a founder of the 18th-century British landscape movement. A respected member of the Royal Academy, Gainsborough's contributions to art were substantial. Thomas Gainsborough proudly holds his palette in this idealized representation of the master artist. Following Henry Vaughan's will, sculptor Brock was commissioned to create a marble statue of Gainsborough in 1906, which is now part of the Tate collection. After Brock's passing, the Royal Academy acquired the plaster model from his studio and had it cast into bronze, creating this striking work of art.
