Statue of San Francesco in Greccio
sketchfab
Greccio stands out as the spot where Saint Francis conceived the very first living nativity scene in December 1223. The objective was to dissuade potential pilgrims from heading to Bethlehem, a perilous journey given that the Holy Land was under Turkish control at the time. This tradition remains alive today, with a shrine dedicated to Saint Francis, the Santuario di S. Francesco, available for visitation. Greccio is an ancient hill town and municipality located in the province of Rieti within the Italian region of Lazio. It rests atop a slope overlooking the Rieti valley on the Monti Sabini mountain range, which is a sub-section of the Apennines. The distance from Greccio to the nearby large town of Rieti is approximately 16 kilometers (10 miles) via road northwest. Aerial imaging techniques are used in photogrammetry.
