This statue, crafted roughly three centuries ago, commemorates the Christian martyr St Apollonia who met her end around 250. Hailing from Egypt, Apollonia was brutally assaulted in the mouth until her teeth splintered and then had them ripped out with pliers. Devout individuals employed this statue as a focal point for their prayers when suffering toothaches.\nVisit our 3D Saint Apollonia model in the classroom to breathe life into your curriculum teaching: https://learning-resources.sciencemuseum.org.uk/resources/christian-martyr-statues\nExplore more in the Science Museum Group online collection: https://collection.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/objects/co8649057/saint-apollonia
