Robert Raikes ("the Younger") is honored by this statue. He was born on September 14, 1736, and passed away on April 5, 1811. As an English philanthropist and Anglican layman, he is recognized for his efforts to promote Sunday schools. Before the establishment of state schooling, Raikes' initiative led to the education of 1,250,000 children by 1831. His pioneering work is seen as a precursor to the English state school system.
