Paavo Nurmi, a Finnish middle-distance and long-distance runner, dominated the track from 1897 to 1973. With incredible speed, Nurmi shattered 22 official world records over distances ranging from 1500 meters to 20 kilometers. His remarkable Olympic career earned him nine gold medals and three silver medals in twelve events. At the height of his success, Nurmi went undefeated for an astonishing 121 consecutive races at distances above 800 meters. Throughout a storied 14-year career, he remained unbeaten in cross country competitions and the grueling 10,000-meter event.
