Marcus Aurelius Antoninus seized power as Emperor of Rome in 161 A.D. He was a man driven by a fierce desire for peace within the Roman Empire, but his efforts were constantly thwarted by the need to safeguard its borders throughout his reign. His military campaigns against the Parthians from 161 A.D. to 165 A.D. yielded remarkable success, yet the devastating consequences of war soon became apparent as thousands of Romans fell victim to a deadly plague brought back by his soldiers. As Emperor, Marcus Aurelius harbored intense hostility towards Christianity and implemented severe persecution against its followers, viewing them as a threat to the established order of the empire.
