Statue of Maenad
myminifactory
The figure, originally situated in a recess, depicts a youthful female draped in an elegant chiton, secured beneath her breasts with a sash and a lavish cloak. She dons a supple pelt draped across her breast; coupled with the fawn nestled against her left arm, this enables us to identify the figure as either a frenzied devotee or Artemis herself. This decorative sculpture can be hypothetically dated to the midpoint of the 1st century BC; its iconography is characteristic of the Roman classicizing style prevalent during this era, which frequently drew inspiration from Greek artists' works. The head, though ancient in origin but lacking significance, was appended in the 18th century along with a circular base.
