Statue of Leopold I
myminifactory
The crowning jewel of Leopoldplaats in Antwerp is a majestic statue of King Leopold I perched atop a proud horse, commissioned to commemorate the 25th anniversary of his accession as the first ruler of Antwerp. Crafted from bronze by skilled artist Joseph Geefs, this masterpiece was cast alongside his brother Willem's renowned statue of Rubens at the Groenplaats. After being relocated in 1872, the statue found its current home on Leopoldplaats, which was renamed the following year to honor the former king. The pedestal bears inscriptions in French, a nod to King Leopold I's native tongue, as he struggled to communicate with his subjects in their own language.
