This statue is an artistic representation of King Kafre a ruler of the fourth dynasty( 2575 B.C.E- 2465 B.C.E). Kafre’s time period was the Old Kingdom ( 2686 B.C.E -2181 B.C.E) . This statue was made of diorite and stands at a height of 66 1/8 inches. There is not much known about this Pharaoh. It is known that during his reign Kafre did construct the second pyramid of the three Pyramids of Giza. There are some accounts that were written by Herodotus, but those were produced many years after Kafre’s death. Kafre still remains a mysterious figure in ancient Egyptian history. Artifacts and art help reconstruct the past, when written material may not be available to scholars. This statue provides at least a clue about what he might have looked like. However, there is a possibility that statues such as this one were not meant to be official portraits. Royal sculpture may have been done to show a glorified image of the kingship. Here Kafre is seen sitting triumphantly on his throne projecting an image of power. This style of statue but emphasized a rigid geometry. The body seems very stiff, while he is making a fist with one of his hands. The other had rests calmly on his other leg. Such a pose appears as if it wants to present a leader that is firm, but reasonable. This artifact currently resides in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.
