This is a magnificent bronze sculpture sitting atop a sturdy stone base, adorned with intricate relief artwork depicting John Stuart Mill. A renowned British philosopher, economist, and government official, John Stuart Mill (May 20, 1806 – May 8, 1873), widely known as J.S. Mill, left an indelible mark on the history of liberalism through his groundbreaking work in social theory, politics, and economics. Dubbed "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century," Mill's vision of liberty championed individual freedom against the tyranny of unlimited state control and societal pressures. The sculpture, crafted by Woolner, captures Mill's likeness with striking accuracy, showcasing his tense and wiry demeanor as he leaned forward, one hand resting on his knee while the other grasped a book – likely On Liberty – in a powerful pose. This iconic statue was among the first three public monuments to adorn the newly unveiled Thames Embankment, following Matthew Noble's tribute to Sir James Outram in 1871 and Baron Marochetti's dedication to Brunel in 1877.
