The Hellenistic deity Harpocrates was revered for his association with silence, secrecy, and confidentiality in Ptolemaic Alexandria. According to Plutarch, this god also embodied hope. The Greeks derived their concept of Harpocrates from the Egyptian child god Horus, a significant deity in ancient Egyptian mythology. In Egyptian mythology, Horus symbolized the newborn sun rising daily at dawn. When the Greeks conquered Egypt under Alexander's leadership, they adapted Horus into the Hellenistic god known as Harpocrates, a translation of the Egyptian name Har-pa-khered or Heru-pa-khered, meaning "Horus the Child".
