Twenty-First Century B.C. Neo-Sumerian Period, Southern Mesopotamia. Diorite; H. 17 3/8 in. (44 cm). This sculpture forms part of a collection of diorite statues commissioned by Gudea, who devoted his efforts to rebuilding the magnificent temples of Lagash and installing statues of himself within them. Numerous inscriptions bearing his name and divine dedications have survived to this day. Here, Gudea is depicted in the seated position of a ruler before his subjects, his hands clasped together in a traditional gesture of welcome and supplication. The Sumerian inscription on his robe lists the various temples he built or renovated in Lagash and names the statue itself, "Gudea, the man who constructed the temple; may his life be long." This object is part of "Scan The World".
