Guanyin, "The Perceiver of Sounds [of the suffering world]," is one of the most revered deities in East Asian Buddhism. Sutras guaranteed that sincere appeal to Guanyin would safeguard a believer in distress. Guanyin manifests in many forms, both masculine and feminine, and was the subject of visions, dreams, and miracle tales, as well as authentic Chinese translations of Indian sutras. This gold-plated bronze image shows Guanyin wrapped in a robe drawn up over a high crown holding a lotus bud. An image of the Buddha Amitabha is embedded in the front of the crown.
