Statue of Daruma

A seated figure of Daruma, a blackened body draped in red robes, stands as a testament to his spiritual journey. As Bodhidharma or Putidamo, this Indian monk is credited with founding Chan (Zen) Buddhism, spreading Mahayana teachings across the vast ocean to China. According to myth, his limbs severed during a nine-year meditation, leaving him armless and legless. A symbol of good fortune, round Daruma dolls created in the 16th century represent the sage without arms or legs.
