Charles Darwin's groundbreaking theory of evolution through natural selection revolutionized our understanding of the natural world when he presented it alongside Alfred Russell Wallace at the Linnaean Society in 1858. This pivotal moment, coupled with the publication of The Origin of Species a year later, fundamentally transformed how we perceive and comprehend the intricate balance of life on Earth. Charles Darwin and Thomas Henry Huxley were two of the most distinguished scientists of their era, and their statues proudly stand in the North Hall of the Museum, a testament to their lasting impact on human knowledge. In 1885, Darwin's statue took center stage in the Central Hall, a position that may have been met with some resistance from Richard Owen, who had always maintained a degree of skepticism towards Darwin's theories. However, in 1927, Darwin's statue was relocated to the North Hall, making way for a statue of Richard Owen to occupy the prominent spot on the Central Hall staircase. This iconic statue has undergone a remarkable journey, having been moved back to the Central Hall in celebration of Darwin200.
