Statue of Calliope

The modern additions of the stylus and tablet clearly mark the statue as Calliope, epic poetry's muse. A Roman copy from the Hadrian period, it was inspired by Philiskos of Rhodes' famous group of nine Muses created around 2nd Century BC or possibly Lysippus' group for Megara's acropolis between 317-307 BC. In the Boncompagni Ludovisi Collection, Calliope is paired with Urania in a perfectly symmetrical position.
