Bhairava is a powerful divinity revered by tribal peoples for his association with cremation grounds, ghouls and ghosts. His worship extends far beyond Indian borders, reaching into Sri Lanka, Nepal and even Tibetan Buddhism. The name Bhairava originates from "bhīru," a Sanskrit word meaning "fearful." In its most accurate translation, Bhairava signifies "terribly fearful form." This fierce deity is also known as the destroyer of fear or one who stands beyond fear. His role is to safeguard his devoted followers from their mortal enemies: greed, lust and anger. These adversaries pose a significant threat as they prevent humans from seeking a deeper connection with God. Another interpretation offers that "bha" represents creation, "ra" signifies sustenance, and "va" denotes destruction. As such, Bhairava embodies the three fundamental stages of existence: birth, maintenance, and dissolution. Consequently, he assumes the role of the ultimate or supreme entity. This statue was crafted during the Chola period, a dynasty notable for being one of the longest-reigning in southern India's history.
