This masterpiece is a meticulously crafted female form from ancient Rome, intricately modelled after an iconic Greek statue style that flourished in the late 5th century BC. Brimming with life and elegance, it was expertly brought to completion in the 17th century by Alessandro Algardi's skilled hands. The original work may have celebrated the esteemed goddess of health, Hygieia, daughter of Aesculapius, who is unmistakably identified by her loyal companion - a majestic serpent. As for Algardi's ambitious restoration in the 17th century, it was deeply influenced by the powerful Athena Giustiniani statue type, carefully requested by his devoted patron, Cardinal Ludovisi.
