Statue of Athena
myminifactory
This statue is a Roman replica of a Greek work of art from the 5th Century BC, showcasing Athena, daughter of Zeus, standing confidently without any visible arms. Her right arm, now missing, would have held a weapon or shield, similar to The Varveikon Athena. In contrast, her left arm might have cradled an olive branch, symbolizing victory. Adorned with the gorgoneion on her chest, this statue likely depicts Medusa, whom Perseus defeated with Athena's help. The intricate details and craftsmanship of this marble masterpiece suggest it could have been part of an imperial cult or a work of propaganda. It would have stood proudly in the city forum, just a few hundred meters from where workers accidentally uncovered it in 1902 while working in the courtyard of a school in Poitiers. According to the inventory register, the head might be a different type from the rest of the body. Separated at the neck, Athena was roughly reassembled with a noticeable cavity on her chest. Her left hand is broken, and her right nostril is chipped. The right forearm is also cracked, while the front of her right foot is missing. Unfortunately, the bronze decorative elements that once adorned this sculpture are now lost. This statue has been digitized by Alienor.org, a museum council dedicated to preserving our cultural heritage.
