This is an ancient marble carving depicting Asklepios, a legendary hero and deity revered for his profound influence on medicine within the context of Greek mythology. As a pivotal figure in the realm of healing arts, Asklepios embodies the essence of medical expertise; his daughters embody distinct aspects of health and wellness, with Hygieia serving as the embodiment of cleanliness and sanitation, Iaso personifying recuperation from illness, Aceso symbolizing the healing process itself, Aglæa/Ægle representing the radiant glow of good health, and Panacea signifying a universal remedy for all ailments. Asklepios was deeply connected to Apollo, with whom he shared the revered title Paean, denoting "the Healer." The staff associated with Asclepius – an iconic serpent-entwined rod – remains a timeless symbol of medicine today. Those devoted attendants and healers who served this deity were known as the Therapeutae of Asklepios. This stunning statue was unearthed within the sacred precincts of the Asklepios sanctuary at Epidauros, offering a glimpse into the revered worship practices of ancient Greece.
