This is a remarkable marble sculpture of Asklepios. A legendary figure, Asclepius embodied the role of both hero and deity in ancient Greek mythology and religion, with an undeniable presence as the god of medicine. His daughters are no less impressive; Hygieia stands for health, cleanliness, and sanitation, while Iaso represents recuperation from illness. Aceso is the goddess who embodies the healing process itself, whereas Aglæa/Ægle symbolizes good health's radiant glow. Panacea, the ultimate remedy for all ailments, rounds out this esteemed family of deities. Asclepius was also associated with Vediovis, a Roman/Etruscan god, and Imhotep, an Egyptian deity of great significance. Born to Apollo, his father shared with him the title Paean, signifying "the Healer." To this day, the staff of Asklepios, a majestic snake-entwined rod, remains a powerful symbol in medicine. Those who served as attendants to this revered deity were known as the Therapeutae of Asclepius.
